The Advisors Group Principals

F. William Griffin, Jr., CFP™
Bill started in the business on January 1, 1986, with IDS American Express Financial Advisors. This career change was the fourth for Bill and provides him with a solid understanding of how different businesses respond to changes in our capitalistic economy. So the two years in professional sports, seven in agriculture commodity production, five in the commercial seafood industry and over twenty in the financial planning field have helped to mold Bill into a well rounded Certified Financial Planner.

Bill is also quick to point out the significance of his Bachelor of Arts Education obtained from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. “Catawba is a small Liberal Arts School in the Piedmont region of North Carolina that provides a good education in many areas of a young man’s life. They know that a well-rounded religious background will give you a good base to build your life upon.” Bill still believes that today and is very active in his church and related activities.

His wife, Alice, has been a faithful supporter and major contributor to Bill’s success. She’s always there to pick him up when he falls. Bill thanks God for her and for all the client relationships that have come his way over the years.

Mark D. VanderHagen, CFP™
Growing up in rural Indiana, Mark learned to appreciate the importance of saving and investing from his grandfather. He was encouraged to save the money he earned from his various jobs rather than spend it and much of it went toward his private education at Wabash College.

Mark’s mantra has withstood the test of time as he still promotes the keys to financial success, which are to plan, work and invest. Those principals have not only served him well but also his loyal clients who count on him to help them build financially secure futures.

After 20 plus years of practical financial planning experience, Mark has added a few more keys to his definition of success - family time and charity. With a wife and four active children, Mark knows all too well that that time goes by quickly and is a precious commodity. He spends as much time being involved with their activities as possible and cherishes their family vacations while they last.

Giving back to the community with time and treasure has always been important to Mark. Evidence of this commitment is witnessed by his involvement with St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bishop Dwenger High School, and Erin’s House for Grieving Children. In the future, he hopes to invest even more time performing charity work as the family nest begins to empty.

Mark is a member of the Fort Wayne Estate Planning Council and the Algonquins (a national advanced financial planning group).

Joseph DeWald, CFP™
As a child, growing up in Fort Wayne, Joe was quick to develop a good work ethic by running his morning paper route. He was fascinated by investments and at the age of 13 purchased his first stock with the money he had saved from his paper route. He continued to work and save each summer to help pay for college.

Joe attended Bishop Luers High School and went on to gain his BS in Computer Science and Marketing from Purdue University. His career started at IBM, as a Systems Engineer, where he received excellent business training. Later, as an entrepreneur, he proved his acquired skills while running his own successful small business.

These skills have served as a foundation for providing the sound advice his clients have come to rely on when making their financial decisions. Joe believes taking the time to fully understand the client and then developing a financial plan based on their values, is the key to helping them.

As a husband and father of three, Joe understands the importance of knowing where your values and priorities lie. For him it is Faith, Family and Helping others. He realizes, that as his parents age, and his children grow older, taking time to enjoy them both, is so important. You can usually find Joe and his family in the woods or on the lake, being part of nature and the great outdoors.

Being of service to others by sharing his time, talent and treasure is a value that was instilled in him by his parents at an early age. Whether at church, with friends, at work or in the community, he is always willing to take time to help. This is one of the reasons why Joe is so passionate about this profession, because it allows him the ability to help others.

Michele Bracken
Michele Bracken joined The Advisor’s Group in September 2008.  She and her husband Sean moved to Ft. Wayne in 2005 after her husband accepted a job in Kendallville.  After much disappointment with daycare, Michele took a break from the business world in order to spend more time raising her children.  Now that Alex and Madelyn are in school she decided to go back to work part-time.  She has many years of experience in office management, general accounting, and customer service.  In addition, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Manchester College.  Michele really enjoys working with people and is extrememly organized and efficient.

Michele is dedicated to performing to her highest potential and seeks to honor God by utilizing all of the gifts and talents to the fullest.  She strives to bring a positive, winning attitude into every business experience.  Moreover, she is committed to maintaining the highest level of business and personal ethics. Most of her spare time is dedicated to her family, but she also enjoys shopping (aka “retail therapy”) and cooking.

Lauren Meyer
-Lauren Meyer came to the Advisors Group in February 2006. Prior to that time she was a stay-at-home mom in Wyoming for 14 years where she nurtured Zach and Sarah. Before children she got a degree in Biology from Northern Arizona University and a Masters degree in Fish and Wildlife management from Utah State University. During college she worked as a river guide and cook on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon for ten years. She had many other interesting jobs including school bus driver, Pampered Chef director, technician for the Bureau of Reclamation and Fish and Wildlife service and District Fisheries Biologist on the Medicine Bow National Forest in Laramie, Wyoming.

Lauren has been married to Curt for 18 years and he shares her love of the outdoors, the West, travel and the kids. Through her diverse work experiences as well as her time at home, she developed the skills of multi-tasking, managing money, organization and hard work, all attributes for her receptionist position at the Advisors Group.  She’s crazy about organic gardening, outdoor cooking, reading and learning about people and looks forward to serving clients at the office.

Patrick O'Connell
Patrick hails from Urbana, Illinois where he grew up to appreciate the Midwestern qualities of hard-work and traditional values. He joined The Advisors Group in June of 2005 as a graduate in finance and economics from Valparaiso University. Over the past three-plus years he has been given the opportunity to hone his skills under the guidance of three experienced advisors with over fifty years of combined experience. Currently, Patrick is preparing for the Certified Financial Planning Exam while he begins his career as a Financial Advisor. His desire to help guide clients in the stewardship of their financial future, accompanied by his knowledge and passion for understanding the marketplace, leave little doubt of his long-term success.

In 2007 Patrick married his college sweetheart, Christy. She is a registered nurse at the Heart Center Medical Group. Outside of work Patrick remains actively involved at Brookside Church, participates in most outdoor sports, and enjoys cheering-on his beloved Cubs, Bears, and Illini in the heart of Hoosier country.

Brad Steenport
Growing up in Fort Wayne never seemed dull to Brad, as he managed to keep active in extra-curricular and career-oriented activities.  As our newest member of The Advisors Group, he brings with him a diverse background of skills and interests.  In his first challenge, Brad successfully earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts.  During college, he worked as a manager at a local Pizza Hut, where he gained leadership skills.  His Economics and Finance degree is now paying off as he is enjoying his passion of working in the finance industry.  During college, Brad was granted admission to the Omicron Delta Epsilon honor society for Econ students through academic excellence.  Brad’s research interests in college included international economics and trade, central banks, and disaster economics. When not busy at work, Brad enjoys any games that test his analytical abilities, most sports, but especially biking.  His future goals include attaining a CFP and getting married (we hope to his long time girlfriend Karrie who is currently working on a master’s degree from BSU).  At The Advisors Group, Brad is responsible for financial plan preparation, review, and implementation.
